I haven't been motivated to blog recently, just haven't had any ideas. This evening nature provided me with a story.
It's been really dry here since last winter, scary dry. The grass is only a couple inches high and was already drought stressed in May. Last week it finally started raining and we were happy. The ground is wet and things are growing. But...when it rains it pours.
Seven Mile Creek comes down past our house. It's dry most of the time. In the spring there is usually a little water in it and our pond fills. So far there's barely been any water in the pond this year.
About six this evening it started raining again, and I mean it RAINED!
Then it started flooding.
Seven Mile was really running.
The pond filled rapidly. Here you can still see the drain.
A couple minutes later the water was running over the road.
You couldn't even tell where the pond ended.
The raging water didn't last long, but it left a lot of debris. The ducks enjoyed it.
Afterwards we went out and surveyed the situation.
This wood washed up onto the driveway.
There was no water in the irrigation ditch before, but you couldn't tell as we unclogged the culvert.
I mean the ditch was dry.
The culvert at the end of the driveway was clogged also and more wood washed out onto the road.
There were worse problems over at the neighbors. I don't know where that bridge originated.
Across the road all that was left of the fence was the top strand of wire.
I also got to see the new baby mule. What a cutie. His mama is that black mare.
He loves playing with his daddy.
We had to hurry home at this point because it was getting dark and we still had chores to do.
It floods like this every couple of years, but usually later on. We'll see what this summer brings.
Mama always said, be careful what you ask for...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful rain and now full ponds and ditches and things shall grow.
I believe that is the most beautifully marked mule baby I have seen.
Yikes - glad you are getting moisture! And really glad all is well and the flood didn't cause too much damage....
ReplyDeletefeast or famine! we are having a feast of wildflowers and grass from all the rain we've had late spring. makes me wonder what the summer will be like...
